The EGR valve recirculates metered amounts of exhaust gas into the engine’s intake system, helping limit the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) while maximizing the performances of the engine.
EGR valves:
As exhaust gases have already combusted they will not burn again when they are recirculated. This slows and cools the combustion process by several hundred degrees, thus reducing the NOX formation.
Emission sensors and actuators:
Emission sensors and actuators constantly support the ECU in managing functions such as airflow, pressure, temperature and positions (throttle or idle).

When do you have to change or check emission products?
Faulty emission products can generate the following symptoms. Products must be checked and/or changed every 20 000 miles:
EGR valves:
A faulty EGR valve is normally due to the valve sticking open or closed. It is normally caused by sooty deposits.
· Reduced power.
· Hesitation when accelerating.
· Detonation (pinking).
· Excessive NOx emissions.
· Rough idle, or stalling.
Idle Air Control Valve (IACV):
· Engine stalling instead of returning to idle.
· Engine only starting with accelerator depressed.
Throttle body and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS):
· Engine unresponsive.
· Poor function of automatic Gearbox’s.
· Uneven pulling away from junctions.
· Traction control system malfunction.
· Engine hunting or stalling at idle.
Manifold Pressure Sensor (MAP) and Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF):
· Engine hunting.
· Failed emissions test.
· Engine flat or unresponsive.
· Malfunctioning indicator lamp light on.
