California’s Inspection and Maintenance Program has been enhanced to include a Low Pressure Fuel Evaporative Test for vehicles older than 1996 that are subject to the Smog Check program. All licensed inspection stations are required to support this new regulation, which became effective Nov. 1, 2007.

Many older automotive computers stored these programs on a replaceable chip, but newer units have chips that are re-programmable and do not require replacement when the programs are updated.
